CLYDEBANK CANOPY

Clyde mega 01
WEST DUNBARTONSHIRE, SCOTLAND

The challenge
Create a canal bridge canopy that, in addition to providing shelter, gives the town an architectural presence that is as contemporary as it is timeless, as stimulating as it is practical.

The answer
Merging zoomorphic influences with strong nautical references - in both detail and fabrication - to create a uniquely distinctive whole, the canopy’s design also allows natural light to penetrate to the bridge deck. Crossing from the south it appears relatively opaque, while walking in the opposite direction it appears open and bright. At night or in poor light conditions, artificial lighting concealed on the top side of the arches gives a diffused white light. Shelter is provided by inclining and partly overlapping the arches.
